Could you image a world without teachers?
No matter what age you are, you have a favorite teacher that you remember.
Can you imagine how your school career would have been without that teacher?
Did they have influence in molding the person you are today? Whether we realize it or not teachers are essentially the most important profession in the world. Every corner of this world has teachers and with out teachers, we wouldn't have advances in technology, doctors, lawyers, CEO's or other teachers to carry on the profession.
There is a lot of conversation in the news today over teachers pay. I personally have many teachers in my life, to include my older sister. I know how hard they work day in and day out. The kids go home and they are still in their class rooms preparing for the next day or working on lesson plans over the weekends. The pay scale for teachers in my opinion is not enough for what they do for our children and society.
I know that pay for our teachers is not just as simple as saying "okay everyone gets a raised straight across the board" but what is simple is the other ways I/ we can help.
1. Volunteer at a local school
The simplest way to get a better understanding of what life is like inside a classroom is to spend some time there yourself. Many districts need volunteers with various skills.
2. Support public libraries
For students who don’t have books or internet access at home, the library is an invaluable resource. About half of low-income families nationwide lack, and libraries fill this gap for students.
3. Attend a local school board meeting
Most education spending and decision-making happens at the state and local level. That means you, as a voting citizen, have a voice to make sure teachers have the support they need.
4. Show a teacher you care
If it’s within your means, you can on DonorsChoose.org (we’re a nonprofit, so it’s tax-deductible), and be sure to leave a comment with your donation explaining why you care.
5. Become a teacher
Fair warning: this isn’t for everyone. If you’re perfectly satisfied with your career or know that teaching isn’t for you, the ideas above are a great way to show support. Teaching is challenging and often thankless work.
Thank you to the teachers in your life
