Archaeologists and historians have technology at their disposal to radiocarbon date items found around the world. Radiocarbon dating allows samples of rocks, clothing, weapons, and more to be tested and dated. They can not get a more accurate idea of the age of the items that are found.
One time that was dated was a Tarkhan dress, which is know as a Egyptian linen shirt. The dating has confirmed that it is the oldest known woven garment in the world. The professional date the dress between the years 3484 BC to 3102 BC.
The shirt was originally excavated in 1913 from a First Dynasty tomb in Tarkhan which is south of Cairo. The dimension of the shirt indicate that it was made for either a teenager or a very small woman. It also appeared that the garment was well used before it was buried.
The garment is at the Petrie Museum of Egyptian Archaeology. It is amazing that the shirt survived all these year and even more amazing was how it was found whole. The archaeologist believed it belonged to the First Dynasty but until the radiocarbon dating they were not a 100% sure. This technology is going to allow for are real peak into the past and the true age of the items recovered.
